So we opened one window for the night, and now it's not night anymore but we're keeping it open still, so our room remains the only place where the temperature is bearable. We're leaving for the mall and tonight we're going to the movies with friends, so then we'll shut the window.

Peanut's parents and his grandmother are coming to visit tomorrow, so he called to warn them about the heat, in case they'd wanna postpone their visit, and his idiotic mother said : "you could certainly turn off the dehumidifier while we're over..." Damn it ! I hate her, I hate her, I HATE her.

We're probably going to buy a small table for the balcony, so they (and we also) can sit outside.

Other than that, I am very sad to say that what I bought when I went shopping on, um, Tuesday I think, when I put everything on my credit card hoping they wouldn't authorize the transaction until today, unfortunately they charged everything, so I had to pay this nice, big bill this morning. I had not bought so much, but I already had used my credit card to pay the two tables by our bed (105$) and the vacuum cleaner (310$).

But we ARE going shopping again, and my credit card's clear till next month, so... yay !

(somebody's choking me right now...)

We're melting. Litterally. Or if we're not really, the butter is. It was almost all liquefied when I thought about it and put it in the fridge. We turned both blowers off and opened the window in our room, else we're going to die in our sleep.

To anybody who might've been planning to call me tomorrow, I will probably not be there, so try my cell phone if I don't answer, instead of leaving a message on the answering machine. I do intend to change the greeting tomorrow morning, and leave my cell phone number as an emergency number, but I might forget, so just so you guys know.

QUOI ?

Beat that, now !

I don't need to go to hell now. This is it, and I guess hell is just maybe slightly hotter.

I left the apartment for about an hour to make a stop at the library and then go to Wal-Mart to have a double of my key made. (Found barely any books worthy of attention, I am such a bad teammate, I'll try to get stuff from the internet tomorrow, if I did not die from heat then)

So I came back here and nearly went right back out. The two ceiling fans are working, but all there is inside, as all windows need to remain closed, is HOT, HUMID air. Disgusting. I don't know how we're gonna be able to survive in here until Monday.

Anyway, so there was a message on the answering machine, from the delivering company for FutureShop, I called back, the guy asked me what had happened, what kind of damage had been done, and then he said he was going to call the landlord.

My boss also called me to ask me if I could get to work earlier, so I'm working at 2:30. Probably until 9, but I really don't mind so much. With this horrible humidity here, I'd really rather be elsewhere. I think Peanut and I are going to spend tomorrow completely outside.

So that was the latest news, I am dying from heat and humidity, send me positive vibes, people !
Help ! Help !

I can't watch TV. Or rather, I can watch it but I can't hear it. Have to turn closed captions on. Can't listen to music. Or rather, I can, but only in my room with the door closed. Can't do laundry. Will have to handwash a lot of stuff this weekend. Can hardly do any dishes, as they put a tube from the blower around the faucet into the drain. It's kind of amusing though because now, whenever we open the doors under the sink, which we do quite often as the garbage can is there, we get this sudden draft of wind.

Until Monday. Until Monday. I'm gonna go crazy. Can anyone of you just invite me over for the weekend ?
This is hell.

The ringing phone woke me up this morning at 8:15 because the landlord wanted to warn me that the cleaning guys were gonna be here around 9, 9:30. I had to get up, have breakfast, take a shower and get dressed in a time worthy of guinness records. They were here at 9:40 or so. I called the landlord so she could come around to check on the guys. She stayed there almost an hour, and she asked one of the guys whether or not they were gonna clean the whole carpet. The guy did not understand because he said he "only [spoke] English". Which wasn't exactly right as he understood most of what she told him in French and was able to garble a few sentences. Anyways. So he said he was instructed to only rinse the carpet where the water had been and she wasn't happy because she said she wanted the whole carpet done - but for that, she'll have to call her insurance company. So the guy went about his business, about 10 feet away from where the landlord and I were sitting, and she started saying how this is Québec and people should speak French, and how she did speak English but as the customer who is paying she wanted to be spoken to in her own language, etc, etc. Which is good reasoning in a way, except that I, as a naive little girl who tries to believe that bilinguism in Québec is a possible thing and not a utopic dream, felt really, really bad because the guy was like, RIGHT THERE and I knew he understood what she was saying.

She left after a while and then the guy turned to me and said : "That lady's the landlord ?" "Yeah", I said. "Sure a nice person, eh ?"
I apologized although I had nothing to do with it, because damn it, think what you want, but shut up about it. Plus the guy was nice enough to clean all the carpet in the dining room. He asked me if I wanted him to do the living room as well, but as he said, this was just rinsing and disinfecting, no cleaning, so I said that if the landlord wanted more to be done, she'd have to call her insurance. He was relieved I think and they left to do the two other apartments.

So they left two blowers and this dehumidifier here, and they make this annoying noise, plus we have to keep all windows shut. Luckily he said we could turn off the blowers at night and turn them on again in the morning, but the dehumidifier needs to be on at all times. It's just been half an hour and I'm already going crazy. And he said they were going to come and get those machines back on Monday. Monday ! That's a whole week-end in non-stopping noise because of stupid guys who can't install a damn washing machine !

Anyway, I have to go to the municipal library pretty much now and I also am going to have a double of my key made for the landlord. On Monday I am working at 9:30, and I have a class at night, so I want them to be able to come in if they need to.

So for the second time in three days the damn place is wet all over and you never realize how annoying having your feet constantly wet can be until you have to put up with this for a long period of time.

This guy came around this afternoon to check the water damage and to know what they're gonna do to prevent the floor from rotting. Other than that, nothing is really new. I'm expecting a call from FutureShop tomorrow, which I might miss as I need to go to the library (actually, I need to locate it first) to get books for my terminology class. I'm also working at 5, and damn it, I figure I've been staying home waiting for people today and yesterday, so yeah, I've done my part. It really sucks because the landlord does not have a key for our appartment. When we changed the lock, we left a spare key to the janitor, who is contact with the landlord much more often than us, and obviously he did not give it to them - except that the guy is now on vacation for the week.

Anyway. I'm out now.
Of course stolen, but I've been wanting to do one of those stupid lists for a few days now.

Washing machine update : Peanut talked to our insurers, and they said again that they weren't the one that were supposed to evaluate the damage. They agreed that FutureShop should have to pay for this (as did the landlord, can't remember if I mentionned it, my brain is kinda blank right now). They said they'd call back at the end of next week, then to come around, check what's been fixed, see the invoice for our washing machine (to prove that it's a new one), that kind of thing. Now they're supposed to call our landlord and I'm expecting that I will get a call from him or his wife afterwards.

The lady downstairs is gone to Ontario for a whole week. I thought that was very funny, although it's not, really.

Other than that, have you guys heard what's happening to Hotmail ? We'll soon have 250 mb of space instead of the ridiculous 2 we have now. I've been hating them ever since I got my hotmail adress, but now I'm beginning to think they might be on the right path. Who knows ? Miracles happen, they say.
Just woke up.

Good news is, lots of the water has dried overnight. Now you can step on it and it's bearable.

I am in total slow motion right now, I do not feel I have the strength to get up, eat something, take a shower and get dressed, which would be the minimum required as there should be many different people coming around today as well. *sigh*

At least my class is at 6:30 tonight and I am not working although I was supposed to.

Wednesday, July 07, 2004

So I was going to take the 12:04 bus to get to school, but our landlord decided to show up at the apartment at 11:50. He said that there was water on the first floor and he wanted to check if something was wrong here. I hardly could believe it : I'm on the third damn floor and the water got to the first. Anyway, I told him the story, and he said he had a vacuum we could use to get the water out of the carpet. Great, I said, so he left to get it. He lives a few streets away, so I thought he would be back after 15 minutes - I fucking waited for him for an hour, when I decided I needed to get to school, so I left the door unlocked, wrote him a note and left him my cell phone number and Peanut's work number.

Peanut left work at 2 to get home and take care of things. He called our insurance company, and was told that, as no damage was done to anything of our stuff, the landlord's insurance company had to take care of this. Peanut called the landlord's insurance company, and was told the very opposite (how nice).

So the water was not vacuumed out. We checked the two appartments under us, and there doesn't seem to be much damage, only water in the walls and stuff. Luckily. Anyways. Right now we need to hear from FutureShop and the insurance companies.

Well, at least the floor's never been so damn clean.

So I was late for my class, and I was in total panic when I missed this phone call on my cell phone, which was on silent mode. I was going crazy, shaking and everything, and it was reassuring to know that Peanut had left work and that somebody was home to take care of everything. So after that I could resume to being my almost normal, slightly concerned but regularly hyperactive, self. :)

It really sucks to step into water every fucking where.
Update : FutureShop called me back, they needed my name, my address, the date of delivery of the appliances, they also asked whether or not I had insurance (stupid question, what responsible being doesn't ?). The guy said he was going to send an e-mail (to whom, nobody knows, apparently somebody who doesn't have a phone) and it could take one or two days to get an answer.
Câlisse ! Câlisse ! Câlisse ! Câlisse !

This would come out much better in French, but I really want as many people as possible to hear this. I definitely wasn't expecting this to happen - but as I've said before, everything that statistically will not happen to you, will happen to me.

So you're all supposed to know by now that last week, Former Roommate came and got out what was left of her stuff. So we had our new washing machine and dryer delivered. The important part here is that the delivery guys came in, put both machines where they belonged and plugged the washing machine.

This morning I got up and decided I'd do some washing. I started it up and proceeded to the bathroom where I had a shower. I got out of the shower, went to my room, brushed my hair, blowdried it for a minute or two, then tied it into a braid. Then I thought the washing was probably done now and I'd better go and put the clothes in the dryer.

So I walked out of the room and my right foot felt water on the carpet. I looked down and saw this dark, about one-inch diameter, circle-shaped, spot of water at my feet. I didn't think much of it, I thought perhaps my feet were still wet from the shower when I walked in, but I did think it really weird that it was so damp. I turned right, took a few steps and saw another, much bigger water spot on the carpet right next to the tiles of the kitchen. I thought "wow, something is wrong", I looked up a little, because I still was going to put the clothes in the dryer - and then I gasped.

Water. Water and soap. All over the damn floor - in the kitchen, from the dining room (where I was standing, on the carpet) until the washing room, on the other side. I rolled up my PJ pants and walked up to the washing machine and saw that the big, black hose that you shove into the wall had totally gotten out at some point during the cycle. I got really, really mad because if the fucking delivery guys won't install a damn washing machine correctly, then they should let the customers do it.

I wasn't sure exactly what to do first, so I called up Peanut at work - wasn't there. I called at home, nobody answered. By then I had figured that if the water made the floor and the carpet rot or something, I wasn't going to pay : FutureShop was. So I got out my digital camera and took a few pictures of the water spot on the carpet, and of the whole floor in the kitchen. Then I phoned up my father on his cell. He answered, and said I should take my pictures and then clean up the mess as soon as I could so there wouldn't be too much damage on the ceiling of the apartment under us.

As I cleaned up I saw where the water had mostly gone, and that is throught the walls of the kitchen, under the carpet all around the place : about one feet from the floor in the dining room, all around to one closet and our room, about two, three feet and a little bit in the closet in our room. I figured it out by walking on the carpet, now there's plenty of nice, big water spots everywhere.

My father had stuff to do not far from here, so he stopped by and plugged the washing machine again - and then we saw on the instructions that you need to shape the hose into a U and then use the tie strap they say is "provided". It was actually so fucking provided that the delivery guys did not install it and it wasn't in the washing machine. Their screwed up while installing.

So then I called up Customer Service at FutureShop to ask if they accepted responsibility if there's water damage under us, if the floor rots or whatever, hoping to get a yes on a recording (Customer Service calls are recorded), I was transfered to the actual place we bought the appliances, I talked to three different persons who couldn't answer me, so I left my home phone, my cell number and my name so they could call me back.

So I am really, really mad. Thank you.
Bon.

Je me sens extrêmement diminuée.

Enfin.
